What is the TOVA Test?

We use the Test of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A.), a computer-based tool that measures how well you stay focused, react to things, and manage impulses. It gives objective, science-backed data that supports a full ADHD evaluation.

What TOVA Measures:

  • Sustained Attention – how long you can stay focused
  • Response Time – how quickly you react
  • Response Time Variability – how consistent your reactions are
  • Impulsivity – how often you react too quickly
  • Overall Attention Performance – a combined score that helps evaluate your attention

TOVA provides important insights into your attention abilities, which we combine with clinical interviews and behavioral history to reach a reliable diagnosis.

How the TOVA Test Works

TOVA is simple and non-invasive. During the test:
  • You’ll sit at a computer and press a button when certain shapes or sounds appear.
  • The test lasts about 21.6 minutes, or 10.8 minutes for younger children.
  • The visual version shows shapes on a screen, while the auditory version uses different tones through speakers.
  • Your responses are compared to typical attention patterns and also to patterns seen in people with ADHD.
It’s important to note that TOVA doesn’t diagnose ADHD on its own, but it helps your provider gather the full picture of your attention abilities.
